Let me help you build the foundation for your business so you can avoid unnecessary costs and making costly mistakes. I will share with you what you need and the tools to get your affiliate marketing website up and running in no time.

Remember, if you have any questions or want to offer your own personal review or feedback, feel free to share any insights you have at the bottom of this page.

Why are websites important in affiliate marketing?

How to build your website

You might ask, can I have become an affiliate marketer without having a website? The answer is yes. You can leverage ads or even social media platforms.

You can use your affiliate link from affiliate programs in Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest. However, you have to read the terms of service of the affiliate programs or affiliate network that you’re part of. I am pretty sure that there’s a part there that includes how you should use affiliate links.

So while you can technically be an affiliate marketer without a website, I do think that if you’re really serious about your online business, it will be to your best interest to have a website. Here’s why:

  • It will be easier for you to get accepted to affiliate programs and affiliate networks. More often than not, they will ask for your website and some metrics around it as part of the approval process.
  • It will be easier for you to promote and recommend products and services. It is all located in one spot and you can include hyperlinks to help your website visitors understand your niche further. It just helps the user experience better.
  • It will be easier for your to promote your brand.

Personally, I just find it so much easier to use a website. Don’t be scared about it, it’s really not hard. Even I had zero experience in creating websites when I started, and I realized how easy and fun it was when I went through the process.

For example: Let’s say I’m promoting swimwear. Sure, I can make an Instagram account full of swimwear, have a great looking photo gallery and include affiliate links. However, I do think that user experience will be much better to have a website where I can post swimwear reviews, talk about the styles of swimwear for various body types, how to care for swimsuits, and just build more content around what would help my target audience. Do you get my drift?

Okay now, let’s get started.

Step 1: Register a domain name and get webhosting

In case you still find all of this very daunting, let’s break it down for you. There’s an easy site builder that I have been using and you can also use it to build your own website.

First of all, a domain name is a web address or the part of a network address that identifies it as belonging to a particular domain. For example: affiliatemarketerzone.com.

By the way, I recommend that you go with .com rather than .net or .org.

On the other hand, webhosting is a service that connects your website to the internet. Without this, no one will be able to see your website on the internet. You need this to store your images, content and website files.

Think about what kind of website you want to build.

Let’s start with a few questions:

  • Do you have a free domain?
  • Do you own a domain?
  • Do you want to register a domain name?

In this case, we’ll go with the FREE domain.

Now, you have to think of a domain name for your website. When you come up with a name, think about how this relates to your niche.

For example: Since this is about affiliate marketing, the domain name I have chosen is affiliatemarketerzone.com.

After you’ve chosen your domain name, include the title for your website.

For example: Affiliate Marketer ZoneDomain name how to build your website

Step 2: Choose your theme

This is the fun bit since you’re actually thinking about how your website will look. You have so much to choose from as there are more than 4,000 available themes in this platform. I would suggest looking for one that is responsive, mobile-friendly, has white spaces, and is suitable to the niche and brand you will be promoting.

You can look at the details to find out more and view demo to see how it will appear. Don’t worry, if you’re not satisfied with what you have initially selected, you can still change this.

Website design how to build your website

WordPress is a great solution since it gives you full control of your website, even if you don’t know much about building websites. It comes with a lot of designs as you’ve seen and you can choose addons to customize your website.

Create your initial content

Creating compelling and engaging content is very important in affiliate marketing. If you create content consistently, you are increasing your chances of ranking in search engines, getting more website visitors and generating more sales.

Now that your theme is installed, you can start creating pages and posts for your website. You can run a blog, have product reviews, information on your niche, trends, tutorials, and other things that you might come up with that will provide value and will be relevant to your target audience.

Step 3: Customize your website

Now, you can tweak your website further to make it more visually appealing and improve your user experience.

There are several things you can do and let me give you some options to start with when you go to your Dashboard. Let’s focus on what you can see under Appearance.

  • Themes – You can update your theme by installing a new one. I recommend that you don’t keep on changing your theme once your website has been published as you might confuse your website visitors with your site identity.
  • Customize – There’s a lot of things you can do here to make your website more suitable to your niche. For instance, you can update your page layout, colors and font. Feel free to play around with it. If you’re like most, it’s more motivating to work on a visually appealing website.

  • Widgets – You can use this to customize your sidebar. You can place images, text, banners, among other things.

  • Menus – You can update your main menu, footer or even create a menu.

You can also upload your logo or even change your front page to a static one or dynamic based on the content you have produced. There’s so much that you can do to customize your site. You just need to be happy with it. Once you are, you can focus on other things like building content and generating traffic.

Step 4: Install plug-ins

What are plug-ins?

Plug-ins are extensions that are built to expand your website by adding features and functions that are not built-in. They are shortcuts that make your site do what you want to without having to do it from scratch.

You can use plug-ins to do everything from removing spam, to creating submission forms, to optimizing your website and creating an online store.

While you can definitely go crazy with plug-ins, please don’t be plug-in happy. Here are some tips to consider:

  • If you can, keep your plug-ins below 5 to avoid slower page load times. If your website is slow, this turns website visitors off and they may not come back to your site.
  • Keep your plug-ins updated so that you maintain the security and functionality of your website.
  • Deactivate plug-ins when not in use.

Bringing it all together

Whew, at this point you’ve managed to build a website so you should give yourself a huge pat on the back.

Remember that you can keep tweaking and improving your website.

To be a successful affiliate marketer, you need to learn how to build a website and how to do it right. This is why I highly recommend going through training so that you don’t waste your time.

  1. Building or creating a website has definitely become much easier than it was a few years back. I can hardly believe that it actually takes so little time to now build websites which is very important for anyone intending to do affiliate marketing.

Personally, I think even if one decides to do affiliate marketing through other mediums like social media, they need to also have a website where they can talk more about the products they produce. I know a lot of people like to watch videos now on products but there are still people out there that still read contents and what best way to write content than with a website.

It should definitely be a must have for anyone serious in doing affiliate marketing.

    1. I’m with you, Jay. I do think that if you’re serious about it, having a website will help you go a long way. And it really is easy to come up with one, you just need to try.

  2. Hey there. I’m glad I came across this since I have definitely been wanting to build my own website. And to be honest, you’ve helped answer so many questions I had. It can be overwhelming to start building your own site. Please keep it up since you’re doing a good job in helping people like me. Thanks.

  3. Thank you for showing me how to create and design a website. I have never thought about making money online, but I you’ve inspired me to give it a try. I have a few questions about Weathy Affiliate. Is it free to join? And after joining, is it a must to go for premium membership?

    1. Divican, I would recommend that you go ahead and give Wealthy Affiliate a try. It’s a great platform to learn from and at the same time start creating your online business. There’s a lot of tools and resources that you can access. As a starter member, you don’t have to pay for anything and you can start buidling 2 websites if you like. You also have access to the training classes. If you’re happy that way, that’s fine. However, if you realize that you’d like to be more serious about creating an online business and earning, then I would suggest going premium. You get access to so much more resources and training, and I’m sure you’ll find it very valuable. Going for premium membership is not a must. You can decide how far you want to go with your online business. Just know that we are here to help you.
